June Play-by-Play
by Duane Barrett, Contest Coordinator
Overview
I arrived at the field about 8:00am to find a mild wind blowing with partial cloudy skies. Weatherman predicted 76 degrees, 10% chance of rain and 5-8 MPH winds for today. Winds were not there yet. By 10:00 AM, the wind was basically about 5mph and right down the runway the wrong way for a racing start to the North, occaisionally drifting across the runway slightly. Competition Saturday in July ended up being an awesome day for all who attended. Thank you to everyone who turned out to support us this month. We had about 30 people counting all the spectators and racers. Also a big thank you to Susan for the typical 4th of July weekend BBQ fantastic lunch!
Weather
Partial blue skies with wind about a 5 to 7 mph wind blowing the wrong way, but we were still able to do a northly take off for immediate racing action and then land the opposite direction.
T-28 Class
Heat 1, Section 1:
We had 8 pilots choosing to fly so two sections of four each today. Terry first, John second, Rick third, and Mike fourth, uneventful first heat.
Heat 1, Section 2: Duane first, Geo second, Tom third, Bruce crashed out lap three for a DNF. Bruce's crash was rather scary as he came unexpectedly from overhead of the three other pilots and crashed just five feet in front of Duane and Geo and about ten from Tom. Shocked, we continued to fly and completed the heat.
Heat 2, Section 1: Four planes with John first, Mike second. Terry and Rick collided at the first pylon on lap two and each claims the other ran into him. Both scored a DNF for this heat. Very unlikely that two of the hottest pilots would collide. I think they both tried to fly the same line around the pylon at the same time.
Heat 2, Section 2: Only three planes this time as Bruce did not have a back up plane. Duane first, Tom second, and Geo in third. Clean heat no issues.
Heat 3, Section 1: Terry had a back up plane and I convinced Rick to bind my back up plane and fly the heat. He was at first unwilling, but we convinced him it was okay. Rick bound my back up and then flew a trim flight before the heat. Terry first, Rick second with a borrowed plane, John third, and Mike fourth.
Heat 3, Section 2: Three planes up again. Geo first, Duane second, and Tom third. Duane had one cut and then did a strange whoopi doo allowing Geo to overtake him for first. Geo actually counted lap 5 twice and thought he came in second, but Duane corrected him and put him in first.
T-28 Wrap Up: Out of the fourteen (14) who signed up to race this year we had nine show up and eight race today. We flew two sections of four. The weather started out cloudly but changed to blue skys and warmer by the end of the T-28 racing today and I believe that everyone had a good day today, ecept maybe those who crashed. Good turn out for the day and thanks to everyone for your support.
Reno Class
Heat One: Terry first, Rick second, Geo DQ'd for crossing the runway over the pilots., John crashed his plane during a practice run before the races and wasn't able to compete today. There were many close almost cuts during this heat.
Heat Two: Rick first, Terry second, and Geo third, Rick first because Terry made two cuts during the heat which allowed Rick to over tack him before the finish.
Heat Three: Terry first, Rick second, and Geo third. Rick had some close calls that should have been cuts but the pylon judges didn't call them.
Reno Wrap Up: With only three pilots today racing was a little easier to follow, but still fast and exciting! Thanks guys for coming out and joining the fun.
