October Play-by-Play
by Duane Barrett, Contest Coordinator
Overview
I arrived at the field about 8:15am to find a gentle, almost unoticeable breeze with very low cloudy skies and a hint of "it might rain on us" in the air. Weatherman predicted 67 degrees, 2-4MPH winds with a 30% chance of rain for today. Winds were not there yet. What breeze there was was right down the runway for a racing start to the North. Competition Saturday in October ended up being a well attended and interesting day for all who attended. Thank you to everyone who turned out to support us this month. We had about 35, maybe more people counting all the spectators and the racers. With Susan on providing an excellent brat meal with trimmings! Thank You Susan.
Weather
The rain held off and racing started, but the skies remained cloudy all day with about a 2 to 4 mph wind blowing the right way, so we were able to do a northly take off for immediate racing action, something everyone prefers! By the time we finished Reno class it was time for lunch. tghe rain never showed up so we had a good round of combat also.
T-28 Class
Heat 1, Section 1:
We had 9 pilots choosing to fly so two sections of five and four each today. Terry first, John second, Geo third, Marlon fourth, and Duane DNF. His canopy blew off on takeoff and while trying to regain control wiped out the very first pylon and of course then crashed. We had to replace the pylon before the next race coulod begin.
Heat 1, Section 2: Rick first, Tom second, and KC third, and Mike W. fourth. Clean heat.
Heat 2, Section 1: Still five planes with Terry first, John second, Duane third, with his back yp plane, Geo fourth, and Marlon fifth. Clean uneventful heat.
Heat 2, Section 2: Tom first, Rick second, KC third, and Mike fourth. Clean heat no issues.
Heat 3, Section 1: Terry with a first, John second, Duane third, Geo fourth, and Marlon fifth. Clean heat.
Heat 3, Section 2: Rick first, Tom second, Mike third, and KC DNF, he crashed near the #2 pylon sometime during the heat, reaon unknown.
T-28 Wrap Up: We had ten pilots show up and nine race today. Ron G. decided not to race, he felt he had not raced enough other races for it to be competitive today. We flew two sections of fiveand four. The weather stayed cloudly but warmer by the end of the T-28 racing today and I believe that everyone had a good day today. Good turn out for the day and thanks to everyone for your support. Oh yes, the drizzle held off for all racing. Of mention, damage of pylon poles results in a 10 point penalty over the year for both Rick Fuller (during T28 Class last month) and Duane (this race) as both broke pylon poles sometime during the season. Penalties reflected in the final scores for the year did not change finish positions for either pilot.
Reno Class
Heat One: Today was a slow day for Reno division only four racers. Terry first, Rick second, John third, and Geo fourth. There were many close almost cuts that didn't get called that should have been during this heat.
Heat Two: Terry had to switch to a back up plane as rick collided with him on landing and broke loose the vertical tail on Terry's plane. Terry first, Rick second, John third, and Geo fourth.
Heat Three: Terry first, Rick second, John third, and Geo fourth. Rick's plane had slowed down, but he still managed to place second and land before it quit completely. They cleaned up the cuts this heat also.
Reno Wrap Up: It was fast and exciting at times today! Thanks guys for coming out and joining the fun. Geo had a much better day today than last month.
