October Play-by-Play

      by Duane Barrett, Contest Coordinator

Overview
The 1st Saturday in October found a renewed interest in racing participants, a total of eight and one new racer trying his skills before next year's racing. Eight out of the nine original T-28 racers were in attendance for racing today. If you missed out on the October racing you will have to wait until next year now. Today was the last race day of 2018. Overall the racing went well, with only a couple of crashes, but they were good ones that put that competitor out for the day. There were a few pylon cuts in the T-28 racing, but not a large number. I did a couple of of them myself. Reno had four pilots show up to race, with Bruce racing an actual warbird. Combat started right after lunch today with I believe only four people flying in that event. More on that from Rob later. For the most part a pretty decently warm day with only a light breeze out of the north. We were able to take off northbound, the pilot's favorite. A big thanks to those who helped on the pylons (Charlie, Ron, and KC) and to Neil for covering as CD so I could race also. A big "well done" to our chief chef of the day, Charlie. Great Burgers today Charlie; you out did yourself I think!

Weather
The weather was absolutely beautiful, very little wind and not too cool, and warmed up about 11:00. We did have some wind, but it was out of the north; the pilots like that because we take off racing!

T-28 Class
Nine T-28 pilots began the race day in the T-28 class of racing that day. Northbound take offs with immediate racing action! We flew two sections of three heats each today.

Heat 1: Section 1, All racers got off the ground charging. Out of pylon one, Terry was leading with Rick in hot pursuit. Duane was just coming out the turn and Terry was half way down the back stretch already. Not sure where Rob was, but he was somewhere behind me. Coming down to the finish it looked like it was going to be Terry, Rick and then Duane managed to slide in third. Rob finished fourth.
Section 2, We had five racers in section 2 with Ron joining in to get a taste of racing before next year's racing begins. The start was a little squirrely with a couple almost out of control before they reached the first pylon. Things settled a little and then on lap two Ron didn't make it around pylon 2 and tried to plow up the field. Welcome to racing Ron! The finish was Bruce, then Brian, KC third and Greg fourth. By the way, Greg Wiren was up from Alabama for today's race.

Heat 2: Section 1, The four pilots lined up and again and at pylon one Terry, Rick and Duane were in a close bunch around the pylon and then the distance opened up. Terry jumped out in front and stayed there. Rick pulled a bit on Duane and then Duane cut a pylon on lap 3 of the heat, but he still managed to crowd out Rob for third place. Rob came in fourth.
Section 2, Four planes up this time as Ron's plane was totaled in heat one. On lap four, during a pylon turn, Bruce made contact with terra firma and did not finish. At the wire it was KC first, Greg second, and Brian third. Bruce was DNF.

Heat 3: Section 1, The four flyers once again lined up for the racing start. The take off was smooth with Duane just a few feet behind Terry and Rick at the pole. However as soon as they hit the back stretch Terry began to pull away again. Rob just went up a little higher out of everyone's way and stayed clear. Of course Terry was first, Rick took second, Duane in third followed by Rob in fourth.
Section 2, Three planes left for this heat. Great start by KC, but somewhere he cut and Greg went on to finish first, KC second and Brian third.

T-28 Wrap Up: Terry has kept his perfect score again this month and is definetly first for the season. Duane has managed to hold on to second overall, and Rick has edged Rob out of third. Rob is finishing fourth this season. Brian is overall in fifth place, with KC in sixth, and Greg W. in seventh. Bruce is eigth and Jeff in ninth place. Chuck was a no-show today after telling us he would be there racing at the Golden Age event. That wraps up this year's racing folks.

Reno Class
Reno class had four planes competing today, Bruce flying a real warbird. The pilots elected to fly 10 lap heats today. Bruce's warbird seemed faster than the rest. We may have to do speed checks again next year; they seem to be getting faster.

Heat One: Four planes, Rick and Terry were fast and very close in flying, however Greg wasn't too far away. Bruce seemed faster, but flew a longer course. Terry is once again setting the pace. Terry pulled off a first place again. Rick was second, Greg third and Bruce finished fourth.

Heat Two: Heat two was about the same pace. Terry first, Rick second, Greg third, followed by Bruce last.

Heat Three: Good start and Terry quickly pulled out in front again. Rick was not far behind at all. Terry finished first again with Rick picking up a second by only about two planes length behind Terry. Greg was third and Bruce fourth.

Reno Wrap Up: Things happen so fast with these planes it is hard to catch all of the action. I think I got most of it though. There were no crashes in Reno today and only the speed today made Reno exciting. I think Bruce kept a little long and a little high to protect his plane. That's a wrap for this year guys, recruit some more Reno flyers for next year.
