September Play-by-Play

      by Duane Barrett, Contest Coordinator

Overview
The 1st Saturday in September found very few racing participants again, but it was better than August. Only five out of the nine original T-28 racers were in attendance for racing. Guess it was the Labor Day weekend that made attendance so bad, but nevertheless we still had a fun day of racing. If you missed out you still have the October racing. That will be the last race day of 2018 however. Overall the racing went well, with only a couple of crashes, but they were good ones. There were only a couple of pylon cuts in all of the T-28 racing. I did one of them. Reno had only three pilots show up to race, with Neil not making it up from Portland. We were able to complete all racing before we broke for lunch about 11:30. Combat started right after lunch today with I believe only four people flying in that event. More on that from Rob later. For the most part a pretty decent warm day with only a light breeze out of the south. We were still able to take off northbound though. A big thanks to those who helped on the pylons (Charlie and Ron) and to Alfred for stepping up and acting as CD so I could race also. A big well done to our chief chef of the day, Charlie. Great Burgers today Charlie, as usual!

Weather
The weather was absolutely beautiful, very little wind and not too warm until about 11:00. We did have some wind out of the south, but not much and we were able to take-off to the north. The pilots like that because we take off racing!

T-28 Class
Five T-28 pilots began the race day in the T-28 class of racing that day. Northbound take offs with immediate racing action! We only flew one section of three heats today, with only five pilots flying.

Heat 1: Section 1, All racers got off the ground except Brian without incident. Not sure what happened with Brian as I had to watch my own plane with such close quarters with Terry and Rick on the first turn. Coming down to the finish it looked like Terry was going to lap everyone, but Rick and Duane managed to slide in second and third before they got lapped. Rob finished fourth and Brian was DNF.
Section 2, No Section 2

Heat 2: Section 1, The five pilots lined up and again and at pylon one Terry, Rick and Duane were in a close bunch around the pylon and then the distance opened up. Terry jumped out in front and stayed there. Rick pulled a bit on Duane and then Duane cut a pylon on lap 4 of this heat, but he still took third place. Rob came in fourth followed by Brian fifth.
Section 2, No Section 2

Heat 3: Section 1, The five flyers once again lined up for a Le Mans racing start. The take off was smooth with Duane just a few feet behind Terry and Rick basically alongside Terry at the pole. However as soon as they hit the back stretch Terry began to pull away again. Rob had a couple of "Oops, I'm kinda out of here" moments. Of course Terry was first, Rick took second, Duane in third this time followed by Rob in fourth and Brian ended up DNF. Somehow, didn't see it happen, but right after Rick crossed the finish line on lap 7 he and Brian collided head on! Apparently Brian got disoriented coming out of pylon 1 and was on the wrong side of the course. Both planes pretty much destroyed
Section 2, No Section 2

T-28 Wrap Up: Terry has kept his perfect score again this month and is definetly out of reach now for the season. Duane has managed to hold on to second overall, but only because Rick was a no-show last month. Rob has managed to hold on to third by 3 points over Rick. Rick is holding down fourth this month. Brian is currently in fifth place, with KC in sixth, and Greg W. in seventh. Jeff is eigth and Bruce in ninth place; not sure if either of them are still planning on racing any more this year. Chuck and KC were there but neither had planes nor could stay and race. Jeff and Bruce were no-shows again, so no new points there. Greg W. has emailed me and claims he will be present for the October race, just to cause havoc. What happened to those others that were going to race? Where are you guys and why aren't you coming out? Only one more race this year guys, so if you haven't been out, COME OUT in October! Just for fun and to watch/help if nothing else.

Reno Class
Reno class had only three planes competing today, Neil not making it up from Portland. The pilots elected to fly 10 lap heats today. Things happen so fast with these planes it is hard to stay abreast of the action, but they had fun. There were no color issues and the judges were okay with the coloring of the three planes competing. We may have to do speed checks again next year, they seem to be getting faster.

Heat One: Three planes, Greg and Terry were fast and very close in flying, however Rick wasn't far away. Terry is once again setting the pace. Terry pulled off a first place again. Greg was second and Rick finished third.

Heat Two: Heat two was about the same pace. Terry first, Rick second and Greg third due to cuts.

Heat Three: Good start and Terry quickly pulled out in front again. Some where Greg dipped into the ground near the south pylon and although it didn't damage the plane much he couldn't finish. Terry finished first again with Rick picking up a second and Greg was DNF.

Reno Wrap Up: With things happening so fast with these planes it is hard to catch all of the action, but today with only three planes I managed to catch most of it. Looks like Terry is planing on setting the pace for Reno Class also now with three more first places finishes under his belt this month and not within reach for overall first this year. There were no real crashes as Greg's was more of a hard landing on the pylon turn. It was the most exciting thing today in the Reno class. It would nice to have a couple more Reno racers.
