July Play-by-Play

      by Duane Barrett, Contest Coordinator

Overview
The 1st Saturday in July found six out the nine original T-28 racers in attendance for racing. Not sure why the attendance has been dropping, but we still had a fun day of racing. If you didn't come out and race, you just missed out. Brian crashed his T-28 during practice bad enough that he wanted to wait and repair it at home so he didn't race today. That put us down to five and we all raced in one section. Pretty hair raising take-offs! Overall the racing went well, with no crashes, but there were a couple of pylon strikes in T-28, more later on that. Reno had four pilots show up to race, with Neil up from Portland. Lunch interupted the Reno class racing, then upon completing the last heat of Reno, combat ensued. For the most part a pretty blustery day with sometimes turbulent wind gust. It was even muggy despite the winds. The racers all displyed some awesome racing skills in the winds! My heat play by plays will be pretty brief this month as Neil was CD and I was racing in all the heats. A big thanks to those who helped on the pylons and to Neil for assisting as CD, also to our chief chef of the day, KC. Great Burgers today!

Weather
The weather was absolutely beautiful (sic) and muggy and to boot we had some wild winds out of the south causing a southbound take off. Winds 8 to 10mph with some gusts as high as 16mph on the old anemometer. Most of the pilots would rather we do a north bound take off as you are immediately racing. But the planes would have just weather vaned today!

T-28 Class
Five T-28 pilots began the race day in the T-28 class of racing that day. Southbound take offs with a circle of the number Two pylon by five planes at once made for some hair raising starts! We only flew one section of three heats today, with only five pilots in the competing.

Heat 1: Section 1, All racers got off the ground without incident, but a mad scramble to the south pylon. Duane hit the south pylon on lap four, but was able to recover before hitting the ground and was able to continue the heat. Coming down to the finish it looked like Terry was going to lap everyone. Rick finished second and then Duane third, Rob fourth and KC fifth.
Section 2, No Section 2

Heat 2: Section 1, The five pilots lined up and again Terry jumped out in front and stayed there. Duane cut a pylon this heat while Rick cut two, but still took second place. Duane came in third followed by KC fourth and Rob fifth.
Section 2, No Section 2

Heat 3: Section 1, The five flyers once again lined up hoping the planes would stay in position until they could power up and take off. The take off was hairy and somehow Duane got ahead of Rick for a couple of laps and there was a small glimmer of hope. However, Rick soon dashed that hope as he settled into the groove and overtook Duane. Just before Rick over took Duane though he had a pylon strike on that south pylon. Once again pilot skill saved the plane and Rick flew out of the heat finishing in second place. Of course Terry was first, Duane took third, KC fourth, and then Rob in last place. Maybe we should nick name Rob tailend Charlie for the day.
Section 2, No Section 2

T-28 Wrap Up: Terry has set the pace again this year with another three first places for a total of nine now. So far a perfect T-28 season. Duane managed to hold on to second overall, but couldn't gain at all on Terry. Rick has gotten back into third place from fourth and Rob is now in fourth with KC in fifth. Greg W. is currently in sixth, Brian in seventh, Jeff is eigth and Bruce ninth. Jeff and Bruce were no-shows for today so no new points there. Greg W. has moved to the south and so he won't be racing again until the Oct closer he says. What happened to those others that were going to race? Three more months of racing guys, so if you haven't been out COME OUT in August! These standings will dictate the start order for next month's first heat of racing pilots.

Reno Class
Reno class had four planes competing today, thanks to Neil coming up from Portland. The pilots elected to fly 10 lap heats today. Things happen so fast with these planes it is hard to stay abreast of the action. There were no color issues and the judges were okay with the coloring.

Heat One: Four planes, very fast and very close flying, except for Neil, he chose to fly a loftier route. Terry is once again setting the pace. Terry pulled off a first place again. Greg cut a pylon some where during the heat, but still was second with Rick being DQ'd for overflying the pilot stations and Neil finished third.

Heat Two: Heat two was about the same pace. Terry had to delay the heat so he could tighten his motor shaft and then he proceeded to dominate the race course. Terry first, Greg second and Rick third and this time Neil finished fourth.

Heat Three: Good start although Greg tried to jump the gun it failed and Terry quickly pulled out in front again. Some where Rick cut a pylon and the finish was Terry, Greg second, Rick third and Neil fourth.

Reno Wrap Up: With things happening so fast with these planes it is hard to catch all of the action. But it looks like Terry is planing on setting the pace for Reno Class this month. There were no crashes or really exciting issues this month. It would nice to have a couple more Reno racers. KC is now playing Chief Chef instead of flying. Thanks KC, good job on the grill though!
