June Play-by-Play

      by Duane Barrett, Contest Coordinator

Overview
The 1st Saturday in June found seven out the nine original T-28 racers in attendance for racing. There were others that were supposed to race this year but didn't show in May or June yet. Overall the racing went well, with a couple crashes and a bit of excitement in Heat Three of Park Flyer (T-28). Reno had only three pilots show up to race this day. Lunch followed the Reno class racing before going into the combat. For the most part a pretty nice day with some awesome racing skills displayed! A big thanks to those who helped on the pylons and assisted as CD, also to our chef of the day, KC.

Weather
The weather was absolutely beautiful except we had some wind out of the south causing a southbound take off. Most of the pilots would rather we do a north bound take off as you are immediately racing.

T-28 Class
Seven T-28 pilots began the race day in the T-28 class of racing that day. We started with Sections of four and three participants. There were a couple mishaps causing pilots to drop out. More on that below.

Heat 1: Section 1, All racers got off the ground without incident. Duane cut the very first pylon as Terry sailed past him. Rick cut a pylon about lap three and then Duane cut the south pylon also. Coming down to the finish it looked like Terry, Rick and then Duane, but Rick had cut the last pylon and had to return and round it. That gave second place to Duane with Rick now third followed by Greg in fourth.
Section 2, Three pilots lined up for the start. KC got off to an early lead and stayed there for the finish. Rob fought hard trying to catch KC and almost did, but had to settle for second with Brian taking third.

Heat 2: Section 1, The four pilots lined up and again Terry jumped out in front and stayed there. Duane cut three pylons this heat while Rick only cut one taking second place. Duane came in third followed by Greg fourth.
Section 2, All three pilots got off to a good start with KC taking the lead again. However on the second lap coming around number 2 pylon KC decided to try being a bulldozer, which didn't work very well. With KC out Rob pressed hard and finished first with Brian taking second.

Heat 3: Section 1, Terry, Rick and Duane lined up for the start, Greg had been moved to the second section to even out the racing. The start was clean with Terry and Rick making the first pylon together. However Rick caught a wing on the pylon and spun into the ground before ever making it to the start line. The heat was stopped to collect Rick's parts and then restarted this time with all five remaining pilots. Terry finished first, Duane second battling over second place with Rob as Terry had left them behind. Rob took third, Greg fourth and Brian crashed out on the sixth lap at number one pylon.
Section 2, There was no section 2 for this heat, all five remaining pilots flew in section one.

T-28 Wrap Up: Terry has set the pace again this year with another three first places for a total of six now. Duane, now in second place, just couldn't keep up with Terry and if Rick hadn't crashed out Duane would be in third place instead of second. Rob is currently in third only one point ahead of fourth place. Rick is actually tied for fourth with Greg W., Brian is in sixth, with KC in seventh, Jeff is eigth and Bruce ninth. Jeff and Bruce were no-shows for today so no new points there. What happened to those others that were going to race? These standings will dictate the start order for next month's first heat of racing.

Reno Class
Reno class had only 3 planes competing today. The pilots elected to fly seven lap heats instead of 10 and fly three heats. Things happen so fast with these planes it is hard to stay abreast of the action. There were no color issues and the judges were okay with the coloring.

Heat One: Three planes, very fast and very close flying with Terry setting the pace. Terry had a slight elevator issue but still pulled off a first place. Greg T. was second with Rick third.

Heat Two: Heat two was about the same pace. Terry had moved to a different plane and was once again setting the pace. Greg cut a pylon some where during the heat. Terry first, Rick second and Greg third.

Heat Three: Good start with Terry pulling out in front again. Some where Rick cut a pylon and the finish was Terry, Greg second, and Rick third.

Reno Wrap Up: Things happen so fast with these planes it is hard to stay abreast of the action. But it looks like Terry is planing on setting the pace for Reno Class this month. There no crashes or exciting issues this month. It would nice to have a couple more Reno racers. Neil was a no-show today and KC just didn't fly Reno, he played Chef instead. Thanks KC, good job on the grill!
