May Play-by-Play

      by Duane Barrett, Contest Coordinator

Overview
The 1st Saturday in April was supposed to be opening day for our racing series, both T-28 Park Flyer and Reno Class, however for the first time I can remember the weather beat us out. High winds and rain caused us to cancel April events. On May 5th (Cinco de Mayo) we held the first race of the 2018 season. Overall the racing went well, with a couple crashes and a couple other malfunctions in Park Flyer (T-28). Reno had five pilots show up to race this year. Following lunch we held the Reno class racing. For the most part a pretty uneventful day with some awesome racing skills displayed!

Weather
The weather was blustery with winds from 12 to 15 knots and gusts even higher. There were even 90 degree wind shifts during the racing events. However the wind was mostly out of the north allowing a northbound take off into immediate racing.

T-28 Class
Nine pilots began the race day in the T-28 class of racing that day. We started with Sections of five and four participants. There were a couple mishaps causing pilots to drop out. More on that below.

Heat 1: Section 1, All racers got off the ground without incident. Rob got flipped by the wind on take and didn't get airborne. About lap four it seems Bruce S. was watching the wrong of three similar colored planes and went off sight seeing in the trees to the west and got caught up in a tree. He decided he was done for the day with no backup plane with him. Terry took 1st, Rick 2nd, Brian 3rd. With that only three of the five starters completed the heat.
Section 2, With Neil acting CD so that Duane could race, the four pilots lined up for the start. Duane got off to an early lead for about 3 laps and then Greg W. caught up and passed him only to cut the next pylon. KC was a close contender but Duane managed to hold off the charge and win the heat. Kc was second, followed by Greg W. in third and Jeff fourth.

Heat 2: Section 1, With Bruce S. out there were only four pilots for this section. This time Rob magaed to stay wheels down until he was airborne and the race was on. Looked the was race was really just between Terry and Rick though as they both quickly moved out in front. Terry took first, Rick second, Rob in third and then Brian finished fourth. All four completing the section for points.
Section 2, Jeff had malfunctions and wasn't able to start, so this section had only three competing. Duane jumped out into the lead again and just stayed there. KC was closing in but turning the final pylon something went badly wrong and he crashed out just a quarter lap from the finish line. Duane took first with Greg W. second; the only finishers.

Heat 3: Section 1, All four remaining racers got off the ground with Terry and Rick battling over first place again but Terry won out (again). The rest of the race was just like heat 2. Terry took first, Rick second, Rob in third and Brian finished fourth. All four completing the section for points. Terry once again three heats, three wins!
Section 2, The three remaining racers got off the ground and flew a good heat with Duane once again taking first. This is a first for him, three heats three firsts and no cuts. According to Rick F. this means he has to fly with the 'big boys' next month since he is currently tied with Terry for first place. Greg W. in second and KC collecting third place points using a back up plane.

T-28 Wrap Up: Terry has set the pace again this year. He may be matched currently by Duane, but I am sure that will change following next month's racing. Rick is currently in third, Terry told Duane he better be ready for nothing better than third place next month. Sounds like a challenge to me! That puts Greg W. in fourth followed by Brian in fifth. KC is in sixth place and then Rob seventh, Jeff eigth and Bruce ninth. These standings will dictate the start order for next month's racing gentlemen.

With at least three planes so close to original colors and looking the same in the air, I urge you pilots with the out-of-the box colors to add some color to your wing tips and vertical fins. The numbers just are not good enough for the judges to see at speed. Try and use colors NOT already taken by other racers. Let's see, these colors are used already: Red, Orange, Yellow, Purple, Blue, and Black. It would be a shame to have to add streamers to the already slow T-28s for recognition purposes.

Reno Class
Reno class got off to good start this month with five planes competing. The pilots voted to only fly one section with all five in one, rules currently limit section to four planes because of speed. Pylon judges were pleased with your coloring this year, pilots.

Heat One: Five planes, very fast and close, except Neil who stayed high on the course. Rick first, Greg T. second, Terry third, Neil fourth and KC fifth.

Heat Two: Heat two was a little calmer now since one race was under their belts. Terry first, Rick second, Greg third, Neil fourth, and KC fifth.

Heat Three: Only four planes started with KC have ESC timing issues. There was a good race going when Rick pulled out and said he was out. Never found out why. Terry finished first, Greg T. second, and Neil third.
