July Play-by-Play

      by Duane Barrett

Overview
The 1st Saturday in July was an overcast, slightly windy drizzly day for the start of racing. Overall the racing was a blast and everyone had fun. For the most part a pretty normal un-eventful day. By the way a big thank you to our pylon judges, Ron and Charlie and to Terry for his help as CD when I was flying. Thanks Guys; without your help we couldn't have had a race.

Weather
The weather was quite overcast with low fog in the trees when I arrived at the field at 8:15 A.M. There was a quartering wing from the SW at about 5mph also. Shortly after I got there the drizzle mist began and steadily became closer to real rain as others began to arrive. We were fortunate and it started to clear up as racing started. By the time we got ready to race the wind had changed to directly out of the South or right down the runway, looking like a southbound take-off. The wind was fairly steady at about 4 mph so the majority of the pilots decided to take off with the wind for immediate racing. They didn't want to spend the extra time doing a south pylon oribit before begining the race.

T-28 Class
Only seven pilots participated in the T-28 class of racing that day. We started with two Sections of four and three participants.

Heat 1: Section 1: All four racers got off the ground without incident. Terry got out in front early and held off Rick to take first place. The rest of the finish was Rick, Chuck and then Greg W.
Section 2: All three made a nice start and were racing well. Duane finally beat his first heat jinx of the year and traded first back and forth with Rob about every lap. But, at the finish Duane held off Rob by making tighter turns and took first place. About lap three Bruce clipped the south pylon and went down for DNF, leaving Rob to take second place.

Heat 2: Section 1: Four racers on the starting blocks again. At the finish line this time it was Terry again in first, followed by Chuck, then Greg W. and Rick taking fourth due to a missed pylon.
Section 2: We had three planes take off again as Bruce's plane was only minorly damaged. Duane and Rob were sparring again for first place. Rob tryed Duane's tactic from the first heat and tryed to fly a tight course, but ended up cutting a pylon and giving first place to Duane again. Rob took second again and Bruce's spotter called him a DQ for flying across the runway toward the pilot's stations.

Heat 3: Section 1: Four up with a good start. Terry first again, Rick second, Chuck third and Greg W. crashed out at the south pylon on the first lap for a DNF.
Section 2: Three up and just a good clean race this time. First went to Bruce, Rob came in second, Duane third this time. He took a couple high laps and lost time.

T-28 Wrap Up: Overall Terry still has a pretty good lead of 100 points ahead of Rick in second. Duane's good day moved him from sixth into third, 22 points ahead of Greg W. in fourth. Chuck is now in fifth followed by Rob in sixth, Jeff dropped to seventh since he didn't fly today. KC also dropped to 8th as he did not fly today either. Bruce is now in nineth and it appears that Tom(10) and Sean(11) are not racing any more.

Reno Class
The Reno class finally has planes with different colors. The pylon judges were much pleased with today's colors as the planes were much easier to tell apart. Thanks guys, but I'm still carrying the streamers just in case.

Heat 1: Four planes up and a good clean race. Terry first, Rick second, Chuck in third and Greg T. coming in fourth. Greg had a pylon cut and then a little wild ride before settling back into the race.

Heat 2: Four planes up and a good clean race until Chuck came at the pilots and had to quickly change course. He ended up pan-caking into the grass along side the far side of the runway for a DNF. At the finish line it was Rick, Terry, and Greg T. third.

Reno Wrap Up: Reno went well today and although Chuck was DNF in the second heat his plane was okay. I think overall everyone had a fun day of racing.
