October Play-by-Play

      by Duane Barrett - CD

Overview
The 1st Saturday in October was a beautiful bright sunny day albeit slightly cool. It did get quite windy during racing, especially the Reno Class. Overall the racing went well and everyone seemed to have fun. By the way a big thank you to our pylon judges, Ron M., Charlie, and Greg W. during Reno Class. A big thanks to Joel for his help as CD so I could have a fly off with Rob for third place. Thanks Guys, without your help we couldn't have had such a fun time racing. The food was good too, thanks Charlie and Greg T. for the food!

Weather
The weather was a beautiful bright sunny day and no wind when I arrived at the field at 8:35 A.M. But by race time that beautiful bright sunny weather brought with it rising hot air currents that brought in the wind tunnel effect and a brisk wind from the south. The direction, had it been any stronger, would have made for a south bound take off and longer racing. It was decided by the pilots to do a downwind take off and be racing immediately and then land into the wind when the race was over. This worked out okay.

T-28 Class
Once again only six pilots showed to participate in the T-28 class of racing that day. Apparently some of the guys are losing interest, or other unforseen events held down participation. We put everyone in one section and flew only the three heats.

Heat 1: Section 1: All six racers lined up and got off the ground, however Brian prop whipped Greg W.'s fuselage and horizontal stabilizer before they got to the first pylon and both went down. Terry got out in front with Rick close behind. Duane turned inside of Rob on the first pylon and then never let him catch up. Rick had a cut some where in the first heat but quickly made it up. At the finish line it was Terry holding off Rick to take first place. Rick finished second and Duane third. Rob never gave up trying to catch Duane for third and was only 3 or 4 seconds behind at the line. Greg and Brian were both DNF.

Section 2: No section 2.

Heat 2: Section 1: We gave Greg time to repair his plane so we had six racers on the starting blocks again. This time Duane was on the inside position of Rob and took advantage of it getting through the first pylon tightly and following Terry as close as he could. He knew Rick was out the there somewhere in second place but was trying to stay on Terry's six. At the finish line this time it was Terry again in first, Rick in second, followed by Duane taking third. Rob was fighting hard for third and almost caught Duane, but although he was even closer this time, at the line he was still fourth. Greg finished fifth and Brian in sixth.

Section 2: No section 2.

Heat 3: Section 1: Six planes starting again for this final T-28 heat of the year. The race was to be between Rob and Duane for overall third place and Rob hadn't given up yet and was pushing hard. Off the blocks Terry in the lead with Duane in hot pursuit they rounded the first pylon tight and headed down the back stretch. Rick cut the first pylon, but again as usual he is really good on making it up. With Duane right behind Terry on the backstretch, however Rob was only a few feet back. Then it happened, Rob cut a pylon on lap two and Duane was able to hold him off again. Right after Duane called lap five apparently Greg came around the first pylon too far and flew head on just under Duane's orange plane knocking off the left main gear. Even on video it was hard to see the impact. Duane wasn't even aware that it happened until he was landing and noticed it missing, he needed those points to stay ahead of Rob. Duane remembered the CD asking if "Yellow", Greg W., was okay to keep flying but didn't know why. The finish was, you guessed it, Terry, Rick, Duane, Rob, Greg, and then Brian.

Section 2: No section 2.

T-28 Wrap Up: We were again missing KC, Chuck, Bruce, and Jeff today, some of our favorite racers. We missed you guys, really! Terry had first place locked up for the season and didn't even have to fly, but finished the season with three more first places. Rick in second was not in reach by either Rob or Duane who were tied for third before this race, but Rick flew away with three more second place wins today. The race today was for third place and Duane and Rob battled it out till the end. The "Orange Baron" was successfull over "Snoopy's doghouse" and in the end "Snoopy" went down in flames cursing the "Baron" and Duane ended up third overall with Rob fourth, just a scant nine points back. Greg Wiren finished fifth overall and in sixth place is Chuck (didn't race again today), Jeff stayed in seventh since he didn't fly today either. Bruce finished eighth (didn't fly), Kc finished nineth (didn't fly), and Brian ended up in tenth place. Tom(eleventh) and Sean(twelfth) had dropped out of the racing earlier in the season and weren't racing any more. That's it for 2017 guys, see you all next year. Let's generate some more interest and come back next April with a larger group. The more there are the more the fun!

Reno Class
The Reno class had three planes and pilots for the start of racing. The pylon judges assigned colors to the planes for judging and the racing was on. The weather was now very bright and sunny, and the wind had picked up quite a bit as the temp was going up.

Heat 1: Three planes up and a good clean race. Rick made a cut and Greg took advantage of it to pull away from him some. Terry first, Greg T. second and Rick in third.

Heat 2: Three planes again, at the finish line it was Terry, Rick, and where is Greg? Oh, that's right, Greg struck first the south pylon, but flew ought of it to continue racing. A lap later he flew into the north pylon this time destroying the pylon. That'll cost him ten points! His foam board racer only had an inch and a half dent in the leading edge where it struck the pylon, but broke the pylon in at least three places. That's a testimony for foam board strength. Greg was DNF.

Reno Wrap Up: Reno went well today until the second heat (see above.) Still I think everyone had a fun day of racing. That wrapped up this season guys! See you all next year.
