September Play-by-Play

      by the CD, Duane Barrett

Overview
The 1st Saturday in September was a beautiful bright sunny day, however it was quite windy during racing. Overall the racing went well and everyone seemed to have fun. For the most part, it was a fun-filled day. By the way, a big thank you to our pylon judges, Ron M. and Robert W. and to Charlie for his help as CD when I was flying. Thanks Guys, without your help we couldn't have had such a good race day. The food was good too!

Weather
The weather was beautiful bright sunny day and no wind when I arrived at the field at 8:15 A.M. But by race time that beautiful bright sunny weather brought with it a wind tunnel right down the runway at about 10 plus mph and with higher gusts. The direction however, made it able to make a northbound start with immediate racing!

T-28 Class
Only six pilots showed to participate in the T-28 class of racing that day. Apparently the weather, holidays and other unforseen events held down participation. We started with two Sections of three participants each because it was so windy.

Heat 1: Section 1: All three racers got off the ground without incident. Terry got out in front and Duane cut the very first pylon trying to turn inside of Terry. Terry was able to hold off Rick to take first place. The rest of the finish was Rick then Duane.
Section 2: All three made a nice start and were racing well. Greg W. hit the south pylon on the first lap and broke the tip off the pylon. He was able, however, to continue flying and finished the heat in third place. Rob held off Brian and took first, then Brian followed by Greg in third.

Heat 2: Section 1: Three racers on the starting blocks again. At the finish line this time it was Terry again in first, Rick in second, followed by Duane taking third. Even though Rick made a cut Duane was unable to catch him due to Rick's superior piloting skills (and sheer luck).
Section 2: We had three planes take off again. Rob and Greg were sparring for first place, while Brian lost control at the south pylon on the first lap and ended up crashing. Rob won out and Greg came home second, leaving Brian with a did not finish.

Heat 3: Section 1: Because we had lost a plane we combined the sections on this last heat and had five planes on the starting blocks. Terry first again, Rick second, even with a pylon cut again Duane just couldn't catch him. Duane finished third holding off Rob, who finished fourth. Greg W. somehow crashed out near the south pylon on lap six for a DNF.
Section 2: No section 2.

T-28 Wrap Up: We were missing KC, Chuck, Bruce, and Jeff today. Terry has first place locked for the season even if doesn't fly at all next month. Rick in second is still within reach by Duane or Rob who are both tied for third place. Looks like the race here is for third place this time. Greg W. is now in fifth following a ten point penalty for breaking a pylon pole. In sixth place is Chuck (didn't race), Jeff stayed in seventh since he didn't fly today either. Bruce is now in eighth, with KC dropping to ninth as he did not fly today. With Brian's second place today he is now in tenth place. Tom (11) and Sean(12) are not racing any more. One race day left this year guys make it out everyone in October.

Reno Class
The Reno class had three planes and pilots for the start of racing. The pylon judges had no trouble today assigning colors to the planes for judging. The weather was now very bright and sunny though with the temp going up.

Heat 1: Three planes up and a good clean start. Greg made an un-necessary pylon circle due to a bad call by the CD, but still took first place. Rick in second, and Terry third. Terry was having minor control issues during the heat.

Heat 2: Three planes, at the finish line it was Rick, Terry , and Greg in third. I think Greg got another bum call from a pylon judge this time.

Reno Wrap Up: Reno went well today with no crashes and I think overall everyone had a fun day of racing. Only one more race day this season!
